I have same problem SL mac 10.6.8,
it was a material thermic default (not detected by Apple diagnostics tools).
Curiously standards mac os applications runs without problem,
just high software processor solicitation as VMware, TeamViewer, Gimp, InDesign and other hangs.
After motherboard repairs all applications runs fine. (sorry for my poor English)
