Changing a Virtual Machine's name

In the life of a Virtual Machine, upgrades often change what the VM's OS really is. I know that it's possible to change the VM's name in the Virtual Machine Library by using the "Rename" option so that a new name appears in the Library listing. But the VM file itself still has the original name of the file and it is repeated in the VM package contents so changing the name in Finder likely wouldn't work since presumably everything should match.

In order to keep track of Virtual Machine files as they appear in the Virtual Machine Folder's Finder window, is there anyway to change the VM file's actual identity without breaking it?

Welcome to the Community,

provisioned space what you configured for the VM, and the used space is what's physically in use.

Consider a Thin provisioned virtual disk with 80GB. Provisioned size is 80GB, and used size depends on what's installed in the guest OS, i.e. the provisioned size is the maximum size that a thin provisioned virtual disk can grow to.

The GUI also takes a few other things into account for value that's the displayed, e.g. the VM's configured memory, memory overhead, ..., but I think this is not what you are actually asking for.

Horizon 7.0.3 Desktop Provisioning fails

Hi all,

I am running into a peculiar issue with Horizon 7.0.3. Have a single desktop pool with dedicated assignment. The pool will provision the desktops but will not power it up. The status stays in "Provisioning" until you start seeing entries in vCenter that the desktops are getting deleted after which the provisioning with error out with "View Composer DiskFault: disk customization failed due to an internal error"

I have double checked all permissions for the service accounts used by Composer as well as connection servers.

Any ideas?

Using:

  • Horizon 7.0.3
  • vSphere ESXi 6.5
  • VCSA 6.5 appliance
  • Server 2012 for composer server

I rename the files all the time without issue.  Have to do both though - change it in the library as well as on disk.

VCenter Support Assistant Issues

Hello All,

I have installed and configured VMware Vcenter support Assistant in my environment v6.0.2.

After all the configuration was finished, just to test the functionality i have powered off one esx host from VC.

As per my reading, VMware VCenter support Assistant should monitor selected vcenter instances and ESXi hosts. But, i never seen any email coming on this issue and i didnt notice any thing from VC plugin.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Community,

Does something in the VM's configuration still point to the original datastore, e.g. an ISO image in the VM's CD-ROM configuration?

Btw. why did you migrate the VM using the datastore browser, instead of migrating the VM from the vCenter Server GUI?

I chose the older version in select version, then chose 6.6 and it showed up.

Re: VSAN cache tier help needed for two node cluster

Hello,

Your proposed set-up looks okay, the disks you mentioned are all on HCL and more specifically they are certified for the purposes you intend to use them (All-Flash capacity-tier and All-Flash caching-tier respectively) .

More RAM is always better but whether you need it depends on the VMs in use here.

You have one issue and one potential issue here:

No controllers! You will need one of these on each host to manage IO to the disk-groups.

And the potential issue is connecting the Witness to each data-node, you will need a switch, not sure if you implied that but thought would mention it.

Here are some resources relating to this implementation that you might find useful:

I rename the files all the time without issue.  Have to do both though - change it in the library as well as on disk.

Are you saying that if I have, for example, a Mac OS 10.7 VM and I upgrade it to 10.8, I can change the VM's file name in Finder to Mac OS 10.8 without worrying about the 20 or so .vmdk files and other files inside it continuing to say 10.7 (or do they change automatically, and if so, is that at first launch or some other time)?

Server core OS installations are not supported. Horizon Connection Server 7.1 requires "Server with Desktop Experience" versions of:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • Windows Server 2016

Welcome to the Community,

yes, to both questions.

You can use whichever image you want (VMware, or a vender OEM image). The vendor images usually contain additional drivers and/or tools which support their hardware. In fact, for some hardware models you even need to use the vendor's OEM image to make ESXi work.

It's up to you whether you are going to use vCenter Server. You can manage the host separately, if you don't want/need the features which come with vCenter Server.

make sure each component (switch and NIC) is set to 9000, if any component is set to 1500 you will get a flag.

I can't check all vmx files, however they are in the proper datastore. I'm able to retrieve all the datastores and trace the vmx files using the path. It's accurate.

Yeah, being a newbie at VMware I didn't realize what I'd done. So, to cut this short, I couldn't wait for an answer so I deleted the VM and all files related. I'm starting from scratch which is not a big deal. I did migrate properly, and that's when I saw what appeared to me to be using double the space, one in each store. I'll never know, or I'm just missing something, but I've move on. Thanks for responding.
